GCCC > Library > Advanced researchers looking for books

An advanced researcher looking for books.

There are several ways you can find and receive books for research.

WorldCat - an online catalog of books (a FirstSearch database)
Other library catalogs
Interlibrary Loan
eBooks (NetLibrary or Greenwood press)

WorldCat

To access WorldCat go to the database link from our home page. Sign in using your library ID and pin. This login information is different from your normal GCCC database login. Use your Social Security number and the last four digits of that number as your password. Choose FirstSearch.

From the FirstSearch screen choose the WorldCat database.

From this screen, perform a search. The following image reflects the search alcoholics AND women.

Get more information by clicking on the title. Also view the number of libraries that have this item (this helps you to decide which books to order). For more precise results, limit your search to audience (juvenile/not juvenile), content (thesis/biography/etc.), or format (book, video, microform, etc). Please note that all items may not be available for Interlibrary Loan. Use advanced search to rank your results by number of libraries that own the item, relevance or date.

You may order your books directly from this database (for more information about this service, see ILL below).

Other library catalogs

WorldCat has a tremendous number of books in their online catalog from all over the world. You may find it more productive to try some local catalogs to find your materials.

Bay County Public Library
Florida State University
Library of Congress catalog

Once you find the materials you can request them through Interlibrary Loan.

Books can also be requested on interlibrary loan (ILL)

Searching ebooks

ebooks provides a detailed search screen. The search options are similar to those in the book catalog. Click the search tips link to find out more about your search options.

Note
  • The keyword field searches title, author, Library of Congress subject heading, publisher and ISBN.
  • The full-text field searches the entire text of the book for your search terms. Beware false hits.
  • The subject field provides the same as the subject keyword search in the book catalog.
Search Results
  • Search results will be displayed similarly to results in the GCCC library book catalog.
  • Each result will include brief citation information and a hyperlinked title for you to click on.
  • A new page will load with detailed information about the book.
  • From here you can return to your results or, if the book seems useful, choose to browse.

Browsing
  • Browsing an ebook gives you access to the full-text of that book. Browsing means that you 'borrow' the book for a short period so only you have access to that book while you are browsing.
  • When browsing an ebook the book itself appears on the right of the screen and a tools frame appears on the left.
Tools
TOC Table of Contents provided with hyperlinks so that you can jump directly to a particular chapter.
Find   Allows searching of the entire text of the book. You can use this as an enhanced index.
Dictionary   An online dictionary. You can type in the word you need defined or if you come across an unfamiliar word in the text of the book, double-click that word and the dictionary automatically provides a definition.
Help   provides help with browsing including use of tools.

Copying & Printing
  • You may print or copy one page at a time from ebooks.
  • Due to copyright restrictions you cannot print the whole book or large sections of the book.
  • Excessive printing/copying is monitored by NetLibrary (our ebooks provider) and warnings will be sent to users who attempt to print/copy excessively. You may receive a powerful electrical shock through your computer if you attempt to violate the copyright.
