In-text Citationsup

Acknowledge sources used in your research papers with MLA documentation style. This will include using a brief citation in the body of the paper that refers the reader to the Works Cited page.

Here are a few examples:

The in-text citations using MLA list the author, and then the page number of what you are citing in parenthesis followed with a period.

On the shelves of Poe's room were many books, some of which were classics (Allen 106).

If you mention the author in your sentence, then you just use the page number for the in-text citation in parenthesis followed with a period.

Allen contends that the shelves of Poe's room held many books, some of which were classics (106).

Setting up your Works Cited pageup

The Works Cited page has a specific format:

  • Begin with the new page as the last page. Continue page numbering as the rest of your paper.

  • Use the same font style and size as the rest of your paper.

  • Center the words Works Cited an inch from the top.

  • Double spaces between this line and the first entry.

  • Indent each entry. (In Word go to Format> Paragraph> Indents & spacing> see indentation then ‘special’ then choose hanging). Indent instructions here

  • Sort the list alphabetically. (In Word use the quick A-Z sort: select the text, then click Table>A-Z sort).

  • Double space the entire document

  • Turn off the hyperlink function in Word for a clearer, more uniform print. Here's how.

The top of your Works Cited page should look like this exampleup

Works Cited = 1" from top
Your last name, page number 1/2" from top on the right
1" margin right and left, 1/2" more for indentations.

Journal (print)

Is it a journal, or a magazine? Here are easy ways to tell:
  • A magazine is popular, contains many colorful advertisements, easy to read, and printed on slick paper.
  • A journal has a place at the end of each article that cites other professionally written articles, contains original research, is intended to be read by professionals, usually has a volume number.
